Tools You'll Need

You won’t need a workshop full of tools to assemble your coop. Here’s what you’ll typically need:

  • Cordless Drill
  • #2 Square Drive Bit
  • Square Utility Knife
  • Tape Measure
  • Speed Square
  • Hammer
  • Ladder

Before You Begin: Foundation Recommendations

A solid foundation is critical to the longevity and stability of your chicken coop. Here are our recommendations:

For All Kits:

  • Level Ground: Choose a flat, well-drained area for your coop.
  • Clearance: Ensure there’s enough clearance around the coop for maintenance and ventilation.

Foundation Options:

  • Concrete Slab: Ideal for a permanent, predator-proof foundation. Ensure it's slightly larger than your coop's footprint.
  • Pavers: A quicker, easier option that still provides a stable base. Lay them on a bed of sand for best results.
  • Crushed Stone or Gravel: Excellent for drainage and easy to level. Create a perimeter frame to hold the stone in place and fill it to a depth of 2-4 inches.
  • Runners: Serve as a practical foundation by elevating the coop off the ground, enhancing protection against moisture and predators. This option simplifies setup and offers flexibility for placement and relocation of your coop.

Note: For the Colonial Gable Coop and Gambrel Barn Coop, a foundation is recommended but not required.

Assembly Instructions Overview

  • Read Through Instructions: Familiarize yourself with the assembly process and organize your materials and tools.
  • Foundation Preparation: Prepare your chosen foundation type according to our recommendations.
  • Assembly: Follow the step-by-step instructions. Start with the base, then walls, followed by the roof, and finally any additional features.
  • Final Touches: Install the roof material, paint or stain your coop, and add any customizations (sold separately).

Tips for Success

  • Take Your Time: Don’t rush the assembly. Precision now means less trouble later.
  • Ask for Help: Some steps might be easier with an extra pair of hands.
  • Enjoy the Process: Remember, building your chicken coop is the first step in the rewarding journey of keeping chickens.
