About us

One day when I was around 12 years old, our Dad brought home a box full of 20 chicks. That unexpected gift sparked a passion in me that grew into a love for backyard chicken-keeping.

Each morning, I woke up excited to see how much bigger the chicks had gotten. I replenished their food and water, made sure their heater was working, and sat and watched them run around in circles for 20 minutes.

As I watched the young chicks grow, first into pullets, and then into egg-bearing hens, my interest in chicken keeping only grew stronger. I devoured all the chicken-related information that I could get my hands on - magazines, books, online articles.

I became the chief chicken keeper of the household, making sure to feed and water the chickens every morning. My favorite part of the day quickly became the moment just after I opened the coop door and watched our backyard flock pour out from the door and down the ramp, eager to catch any bugs that might’ve been waiting outside.

When the evening came around, it was my responsibility to close up the coop, count each of the hens to make sure no one was missing, and collect the eggs for tomorrow’s breakfast.

That summer was filled with mid-morning rounds to collect treats for the hens; Japanese beetles were their favorite. I can still remember how they came running towards me as soon as they saw me start walking out to their coop. I learned that each of my hens had a distinct personality; some were more curious, others were more ornery. I came to love each of them.

A couple of years after my first flock of chicks, I started Chicken Huggers.

Chicken Huggers was born out of a simple childhood fascination that evolved into a love and respect for backyard chicken keeping. At Chicken Huggers, we believe in raising chickens in a way that's not only sustainable but also enriches both their lives and ours.
